Tick Control Using Professional Lawn Care
Learn How to Prevent Ticks in your NH Yard
Tick control is vital in New Hampshire. The increase in the cases of Lyme disease in the area has led to a greater awareness of the causes and symptoms of this parasitic borne pathogen. Deer ticks look to be the major culprit in carrying the disease and our sharing of land with the increasing deer population makes humans more likely to be in contact with the ticks that carry Lyme disease and other diseases.
The larger your property the more likely that you will have ticks on it. This is because deer will come into your wood lot and along your paths making it prime real estate for a host hungry tick. If you have a well maintained lawn and yard, then you can greatly reduce the number of ticks near your home. Ticks love dense underbrush, thick ground coverings, and wooded areas. If they are trimmed back then they will be lingering around the perimeters of your yard waiting for a host.
If you live in New Hampshire then you should be giving serious consideration to changing the way it’s landscaped so that your odds of having ticks will decrease. Heafield Landscaping can help groom your yard in a way that can minimize your tick infestation.
Here’s what we can do to help your property be less appealing to ticks:
- We keep the grass mowed and trimmed, ticks will hide in tall grass.
- We remove leaf litter and brush from the edge of the lawn, another favorite hiding spot.
- Trim tree branches and shrubs around the edge of the lawn to let in more sunlight (the ticks hate the sun light).
- Put in wood chip barriers, mulch, or gravel borders of at least three feet between the lawn and its brush or ground cover edges. Ticks aren’t very good at traversing these barriers and tend to stay on the other side of them.
Here’s a list of other things you can do that will help reduce your tick population:
- Call a certified pest control company to spray your lawn with tick pesticides.
- Put up fencing to prevent deer and other tick hosts from being on your property.
- Move playgrounds and other gathering places away from the edges of the lawn.
- Manage your pet’s activity (check for ticks regularly) and keep bird feeders and wood piles away from your house.
